Tiny Atlas
DRAFT for partner review

Help record your language

The "Voices of the valley" section is waiting for recordings. Nothing has been recorded or generated yet. Recordings are made only by local partners, with the speaker's written or recorded consent, and the speaker decides what is published and how they are credited.

Principles

Who records

Recording is done by local partners. A confirmed candidate is Idara Baraye Taleem-o-Taraqi (IBT), which set up the first mother tongue (Torwali) based multilingual education school, in Bahrain in August 2008. The source page is torwali.org, which does not say it is IBT's own site. Other partners for Gawri and Ushojo are not yet confirmed.

Steps

  1. The partner agrees a local protocol and the language list with the app team.
  2. The speaker is approached through the partner, in their own language.
  3. The speaker reads or hears the consent form and asks questions. A day to think is offered.
  4. The speaker signs or gives recorded consent, and chooses the licence and credit line.
  5. The recording is made. The speaker may stop at any time.
  6. The partner transcribes in the original language and makes an English translation, which the speaker approves.
  7. The app team checks the consent record and publishes.

In plain language

We want to record you speaking in your own language about things you choose. We write down what you say and translate it into English. The recording may be played in this app next to the place it is about, under the name you choose.

You decide your name or a made-up name, the licence, and what to leave out. You can stop at any time, and you can ask us to remove the recording later. Copies that others have already downloaded cannot always be removed, and we will say so. No one will use your voice to make new speech.

Licences

What is stored

The audio, the approved transcript and translation, the speaker credit, the licence, the consent record ID, the place and the recording date. The signed form stays with the partner and is not published. Contact details and addresses are not stored.

Withdrawal, credit and privacy

Withdrawal removes the recording from the app. Speakers are credited by the name they choose, and the partner is credited for each recording. Faces, home addresses and family names are left out unless the speaker asks otherwise. Sensitive topics are recorded only if the speaker wants to, and are reviewed before publishing. Payment terms are agreed with each partner and are not set by the app.
